HUMANITARIAN AID TO HAITI

Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis announced the shipment of humanitarian aid to Haiti in a press conference held on February 4. The shipment departed on February 7 on a direct flight to Port-au-Prince, headed by Kouvelis himself. The Boeing 747 carried 50 tonnes of pharmaceutical supplies, tents, and food. It also transported members of the NGOs Doctors of the World, and Hellenic Rescue Team, who will remain there to help the Haitian people. The minister will meet with a representative of the Haitian government and will deliver a letter on behalf of Prime Minister George Papandreou to the President of Haiti’s government, stressing the historic ties between the two countries and underscoring Greece’s resolve to continue providing aid to Haiti.

Greek PM: 'concerted attack' against the euro

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has warned that a "concerted attack" was underway against the euro, with Spain and Portugal now being targeted, after Greece. Speaking to the press during an official visit to New Delhi, Papandreou said that he had warned of such an attack by speculators as early as the first EU summit he attended as prime minister, at which time he had stressed that Greece was not Europe's problem and that speculators would find, after Greece, another "weak link" through which to attack the euro. The premier stressed that the subsequent targeting of Spain and Portugal indicated that Greece is not an isolated case. The problem, he added, is a European and an international one, and coordinated action and solidarity are needed on this matter.

ATHENS CARNIVAL 2010

This year’s Carnival season in Athens kicked off yesterday at the Varvakios Market with plenty of music and culinary treats, while the party continued in the evening in Plaka and at the City of Athens Technopolis venue, where a retro party for senior citizens was staged. The City of Athens encourages everyone to join the lively, cheerful celebrations that will take place in both the city centre and city neighbourhoods from February 4 to 15. Yesterday was "Smoke Thursday" (or Tsiknopempti in Greek). Tsiknopempti is an annual rite in Greece, whose origin is lost through the centuries. It basically is a day of meat eating before lent and fasting begin.

Certificate of Attainment in Greek

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek was legally established by the Ministry of Education in November 1998. The Centre for the Greek Language is the exclusive official authority responsible for the design and administration of exams. The certificate is an official title that certifies the level of Attainment in Greek Language. Tests take place in officially recognised examination centres worldwide. Greek Education Office in Sydney is an officially recognised examination centre in New South Wales and Canberra (ACT). Exams take place in May every year in all examination centers around the world. The registration and examination dates are usually announced at the beginning of February every year. Application forms are submitted to the examination centers.
